What's happening to me?
This programme is booked by intermediate schools as part of their health module - used either instead of, or as well as, the public health nurse's presentation.
An introduction to adolescence for pre-teens and their parents
Parents Inc. offers a one-night introduction to adolescence for ‘tweenagers’ and their parents called ‘What’s happening to me?’
This evening is designed to give 11 – 12 year-olds essential information which will equip them for the years ahead, preparing them to both understand and enjoy this important stage. It is designed also as a platform for parents to continue discussion with their pre-adolescent son or daughter.
What’s happening to me? covers the physical changes, sexuality and hygiene, plus the social and emotional aspects.
“In a school of over 1,000 students, this was the first time we have had an evening such as this where parents and kids attended together. It was standing room only and a great fun way to begin our health topic.”
“It was encouraging to know that as a parent you are doing the right thing.”
“The atmosphere was non-threatening, even when we knew we all make mistakes – we could all laugh about them together.”
“Thank goodness there are people who help us understand our teenagers.”

Two extra dimensions set this event apart. The first is the humour and professional style, which is the hallmark of all Parents Inc. presentations. Large-screen graphics are used throughout. People are entertained and relaxed.
The second dimension is the tone of respect. As well as being professional speakers, the presenters of What’s happening to me? are parents themselves, and so the evening is more than mere facts. Something of their heart is communicated – the desire that adolescents should grow through this time into healthy young people with dignity and self respect, and have a great relationship with their parents.
People leave feeling inspired and enthusiastic about the opportunities ahead of them.
Adolescence always has risks and challenges, but it need not be the bleak years of conflict and negative emotions that some families suffer. High expectations and simple techniques can make the teenage years not just tolerable, but exciting and rewarding. A What’s happening to me? event is a great start.
