First launched in Auckland in 1994 by Mayor of Auckland, Les Mills, thousands of fathers have attended this hugely popular annual Breakfast over the past 16 years. We are also proud to have extended our annual Fathers' Breakfast events to Christchurch in 2007 and will be hosting our first Breakfast in Wellington this year.
Men want to be great fathers as well as successful in their day jobs. The early morning Breakfast is designed for busy men who want a concentrated dose of inspiration and encouragement. It gives men a shot in the arm to do the best they can where it matters the most while they enjoy a great feed!
Speakers present their personal story of fatherhood, sharing the things that have worked and the things that haven’t. The practical nature of the speakers’ advice, combined with the atmosphere generated by hundreds of fathers in a room, makes this a powerful event.
Each Breakfast has had a star line-up of speakers, such as Stephen Tindall, Ralph Norris, Henry van der Heyden, Sean Fitzpatrick, Graham Henry, Robbie Deans, Nick Farr-Jones, Neil Finn and John Campbell. “The speakers we’ve had at the Breakfasts over the years have been from varied professions – sports, business, medicine, entertainment – but they all have one thing in common,” says Ian, “They’re all outstanding fathers.”
Men are getting the message about fatherhood. “Increasingly they realise that fathers have a valuable role to play in their children’s lives.”, says Ian. “Over the last decade we’ve seen a renaissance in the art of fatherhood. Men now see their role as a father as being supremely important to their identity. It’s not just a side dish – it’s the main course in their life. Men used to think being a Dad meant just coming up with the bucks, and they’d leave the real work of parenting to Mum. But now fathers want to be active and involved in their kids’ lives. I think Dads are getting it: a dad can make a huge, positive difference!”
