Jan-Balderston

5 minutes with our team: Jan Balderston

Behind the scenes at The Parenting Place is a team of fantastic, passionate, fun (quirky) people. We wanted to introduce you to some of these family-loving people across our various departments. This week, meet one of our long-time team members, Jan Balderston.

What do you do at The Parenting Place?

I am the always-friendly, happy-to-chat, slightly-manic face you’ll find downstairs at The Parenting Place reception desk (otherwise known as the centre-liaison). When I’m not at reception or taking your calls, I’m busy coordinating our room hires, chatting to parents in the centre, booking in Family Coaching appointments or ordering an amazing latte from The Parenting Place café. My title is centre-liaison, it’s my job to take enquiries and help parents with any questions they might have about what The Parenting Place has to offer.

How long have you worked here? Tell us a favourite memory.

Coming up just over nine years! I started working in the café when the centre first opened. After two years I moved into my current role at reception. We have had many fantastic work functions over the years, I remember one event we had a mechanical bull to ride, I managed to stay on for at least 30 seconds.

What’s your nickname at work and why?

I used to be called ‘Jan, Jan, the frying pan’ at school – luckily my work mates haven’t heard that one!

Tell us a bit about your family

Where do I start? I have a wonderful husband, seven amazing children, all either married or with partners who I adore, two granddaughters, three grandsons (and one more arriving in July!) – plus one very spoiled cat.

What’s your favourite thing about being a grandparent?

Watching your child parenting their children – and doing a great job! Plus, Nanas can get away with so much more (like compulsory hugs on arrival and departure).

We have heard about the legendary Balderston Christmases – what are some other fun family traditions you have?

Monday night is family night in the Balderston home. All my children have flown the nest and so we dedicate Monday’s to a dinner and catch-up for whoever is able to make it. We play games, eat interesting food and sometimes just have a good ol’ chat. My favourite family night was when we played Hide and seek around the house and yard in the dark. My husband locked himself in the car boot, my son-in-law hid in a tree and got bitten by mosquitoes, and simply I hid in the wardrobe and ended up winning!

Two truths and a lie. Go.

I once made a flat white for John Key. I was the lead singer for while of a band called Silver Hearts. My cat has epilepsy.
