Equipping young people with life skills
Attitude is the youth division of The Parenting Place, providing presentations and resources to approximately 94% of New Zealand secondary schools. These programmes cover the five strands of the health curriculum and work in conjunction with health teachers and their own programmes.
Attitude programmes give young people the tools to construct meaningful lives. They encourage mental and emotional resilience and inspire teenagers to make informed choices that will help them protect their own futures. Attitude addresses the fundamental issues that can lead to teenage suicide, unwanted pregnancy and low self-esteem, amongst other concerns.
The team of presenters are skilled in obtaining the attention of teenagers. By using humour, engaging visuals and friendly interaction, they create an atmosphere that provokes young people to evaluate their current ideas on a given topic and consider new ones.
The 'magic' part of the Attitude programme is the live presentations in schools. The eight different presentations are up-to-the-minute, funny, informative, research-based, and backed up with vibrant visuals. The presenters use humour and honesty along with the best mentoring principles to engage and inspire young people to think about and plan for their future. Topics include choices, mental health, friendships, sex, relationships, drugs, alcohol, use of technology and families.
Attitude produces five resource handbooks which complement the presentations and challenges some core thinking that may pre-determine a teenager's future. These resources encourage teenagers to adopt strong 'head-messages' to foster a sense of the future and good social connections. Handbooks can be purchase from our online shop.
The interactive Attitude website serves as a 24-hour resource for teenagers, parents and teachers, reinforcing and augmenting the programme.
